HESA Information Reporting Interface Service (IRIS)
The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) is the official agency for the collection, analysis and dissemination of quantitative information about higher education in the UK. Information regarding the most recent student data submission arrangements can be found on HESA's website.
As part of HESA's data collection system, data are extracted via the HESA Information Reporting Interface Service (IRIS) for use by HE and FE institutions in Wales. The benefit of this system is that institutions get early sight of data that may be used to inform funding allocations to enable them to correct data at an early stage, and it also forms part of the process for sign off of End of Year Monitoring (EYM) data. The 2016/17 IRIS output for Welsh institutions contain the following data extracts:
- End of Year Monitoring (EYM)
- Per capita funding
- Premium Funding: Access and Retention; Disability, Welsh Medium and Expensive Subjects
- Postgraduate Research Training funding
- Corporate strategy targets
- Franchised out summary
- Income Analysis data summary
- HEFCW part-time fee waiver scheme students
- Data quality reports
Detailed information on the use of the data and extraction criteria:
We have produced a document showing methodology used to estimate modules with unknown outcomes as part of the EYM extract.
We sent an email to all institutions when the IRIS system went live to include changes since the previous year.
The latest postcode files to be used as part of Access and Retention premium extraction and in the Corporate Strategy Target extractions can be downloaded via the following links. Please note that due to the size of the files it is advisable to right click on the link and select 'save as'.
The EYM data must be signed off and returned to HEFCW using the IRIS output tables from the last IRIS transaction from which the 2016/17 HESA data is signed off on 3 November 2017.
You will find a sign off area to the bottom of the EYM tables 1a, 1b, 1c, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Please note that you are able to make changes to the IRIS EYM tables, with relevant changed cells highlighted in red and a covering email to explain the changes.
Signed tables will need to be checked, signed and sent back to us in HEFCW (firstname.lastname@example.org) by Friday 17 November 2017.
Institutions should download the part-time fee waiver table from the final IRIS output and provide it to HEFCW with any amendments or explanations required so it shows the actual value of fee waivers for 2016/17 students.
The table should be electronically signed by the authorised signatory for the part-time fee waiver data and emailed to email@example.com.
The signed IRIS table should be returned by Friday 17 November 2017. Further information can be found in circular W17/22HE: The HEFCW part-time undergraduate fee waiver scheme.
For extra guidance and to report any issues please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
In working through your IRIS outputs, if you have suggestions or improvements we could make to the following year's IRIS system, we welcome any feedback.
