External reports and studies

We commission other organisations to carry out research or report on an area to inform policy or to provide guidance for the higher education (HE) sector in Wales. Sometimes, we might do this with other organisations such as the other UK funding bodies.

  • October 2011
  • This report, which was commissioned jointly by the four UK higher education funding bodies, outlines a new methodology for calculating the relative costs of undertaking research in different subjects. It uses data provided by the Transparent Approach to Costing (TRAC). We intend to draw on the outcomes of the study in any review of our research funding method (QR) which we may undertake following the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.
    • April 2011
    • This study, by Oxford Economics, looked at the wider long term economic benefits for Wales of international and EU students, and showed the importance of overseas students to Welsh universities, which has been a significant feature of the Assembly Government's strategies for HE through to For our Future.
      • December 2009
      • This report analysed the impact of the Additional Funding for Part-Time Students. The funding was provided to the sector following the publication of the Graham Review 2006, and made available initially for the three year period 2007/08 to 2009/10. Continuation of funding was subject to the outcome of this review.
      • March 2009
      • The objective of the Joint Agreement is to demonstrate high level agreement from both the Welsh Assembly Government and other organisations to the shared goal of eradicating child poverty.
      • January 2008
      • This report provides an outline of the research and development outcomes under the Ethnicity, Gender and Degree Attainment project, which was undertaken by the Higher Education Academy and Equality Challenge Unit between 2007 and 2008.
