HEFCW supports the development of Welsh medium higher education and works with the sector to increase enrolments on Welsh medium courses.
Our policy direction is towards:- encouraging higher education institutions (HEIs) to adopt a strategic approach
- enabling central support and co-ordination, and encouraging collaborative developments – we support the Strategic Framework and National Development Plan for Welsh medium higher education, including through funding for the Centre for Welsh Medium Higher Education and the programmes and activities which it facilitates and co-ordinates on behalf of the sector
Our funding also includes a Welsh medium premium, or extra payment, to HEIs for enrolments on Welsh medium courses or modules.
The Reaching Wider partnerships which contribute to widening access to higher education are involved in stimulating demand for Welsh medium courses.
