Welsh medium higher education

Opportunities to study through the Welsh language are a distinctive and important part of higher education in Wales.

For more information on studying through the medium of Welsh, the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol website.

HEFCW supports the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethal to extend the range of Welsh medium provision and increase student participation in Welsh medium higher education.

Our Corporate Strategy includes the following measure:
  • The number of students studying higher education courses at higher education institutions and further education institutions in Wales undertaking at least 5 credits of their course through the medium of Welsh, per annum, will rise from 4,335 in 2011/12 to 5,600 in 2015/16, including a rise from 2,269 to 3,030 in the number of those studying at least 40 credits per annum.
Our policy direction is towards:
  • Enabling study through the medium of Welsh to take place in a wider range of programmes and locations in Wales

From April 2011 we have funded the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol which promotes and supports the development of Welsh medium higher education.

Our Welsh Language Scheme sets out the context for our policies on Welsh medium provision.
