Welsh medium higher education
Opportunities to study through the Welsh language are a distinctive and important part of higher education in Wales.
For more information on studying through the medium of Welsh, go to the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Mantais website.
HEFCW supports the development of Welsh medium higher education and works with the sector to increase enrolments on Welsh medium courses.
Our Corporate Strategy includes the following measure:
The number of Welsh domiciled students at Welsh higher education institutions and further education institutions undertaking some element of their course through the medium of Welsh will rise from 4,667 in 2008/09 to 5600 in 2012/13.
- encouraging higher education institutions (HEIs) to adopt a strategic approach to developing and delivering Welsh medium provision
- enabling central support and co-ordination, and encouraging collaborative developments
From April 2011 we are providing funding for the newly-established Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol which will promote and support the development of Welsh medium higher education. Our funding also includes a Welsh medium premium, or extra payment, to HEIs for enrolments on Welsh medium courses or modules.
The Reaching Wider partnerships which contribute to widening access to higher education are involved in stimulating demand for Welsh medium courses.
Our Welsh Language Scheme sets out the context for our policies on Welsh medium provision.
