Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol
The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol works with universities across Wales to develop Welsh language medium opportunities for students. It funds Welsh medium lecturers and offers undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for students to study higher education courses through the medium of Welsh.The Coleg's objective is:
- "for the benefit of the public, to advance learning and knowledge by promoting, maintaining, developing and overseeing Welsh medium provision in higher education in Wales, working with and through higher education institutions in Wales".
The Centre for Welsh Medium Higher Education was incorporated into the Coleg. The Coleg builds on this work through creating effective partnerships, increasing the range of courses available in Welsh and, with universities, increasing the number of lecturers who can deliver courses in Welsh. Universities pay a subscription to the Coleg.Some of the Coleg’s major programmes are:
- Scholarships for students studying through the medium of Welsh
- Research scholarships
- Academic Staffing Scheme
- Y Porth website
- Strategic Development and Projects Fund.
The Coleg has an influential presence in Welsh universities, working to support and promote the principle of studying through the medium of Welsh.
In 2014, Old Bell 3 Ltd. in association with Dateb Ltd. carried out an evaluation of the Coleg’s progress to date. The report found that significant progress had been made in broadening and extending the range of Welsh medium study opportunities for students in Wales.
