Subjects of broader importance to Wales

This refers to subjects which have needed some kind of supportive intervention to maintain courses in universities and/or to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups. Such intervention is necessary to address a mismatch between supply and demand, or because the subject has a strategic importance within Wales and the UK.

We have identified two subject areas that have a broader importance to Wales
  • science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
  • modern foreign languages (MFL)
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)

In 2013 we funded Reaching Wider Partnerships to develop STEM pathways and pilot models of effective practice in widening and increasing access to STEM provision in higher education. Delivery of these pathways and models is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2015 and an evaluation of these pathways and models is expected to report in 2016.

Modern foreign languages (MFL)

From 2009 to 2015 we funded Routes into Languages Cymru (Routes Cymru) to increase the number of pupils choosing languages at university. We hold representation on Routes Cymru’s steering group.
