Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales

The Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW) is designed to offer learners greater flexibility in the way they study and aid progression from one level to the next and between different types of learning, for example between further and higher education.

It allows students to gain credit as they study and accumulate credits to gain qualifications. All higher education institutions in Wales have signed up to the CQFW.

The Framework is operated by a team in the Welsh Government. The CQFW website includes a short video animation introducing the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales and provides support and guidance for the effective delivery of the Framework.

A review and evaluation of the impact of the Credit and Qualifications Framework for Wales (CQFW) was carried out in 2014.

The Benefits of CQFW
For learners it provides a system that:
  • recognises and values achievements
  • assists their progress in education and employment across the UK, as well as potentially in Europe
  • makes it easy for them to transfer their knowledge and skills between career paths and providers of education and training
  • allows them to accumulate credits to meet career and personal development needs
For employers it offers a means by which they can:
  • easily assess the relative values of different qualifications
  • encourage more people in Wales to develop the skills to meet their requirements
  • overcome skill shortages
For others, such as universities, colleges, schools and awarding bodies, it offers a framework
that enables them to:
  • respond to changing market needs
  • promote transfer and progression among learners
  • create relevant and tailor-made learning
  • make post-16 education and training more responsive to the needs of prospective students
  • encourage more people in Wales to develop the skills to meet their requirements
  • overcome skill shortages
