Business and communities
HEFCW supports the higher education sector in activities that contribute to the economic and social well-being of Wales. This is often referred to as the sector’s “third mission”.
HEFCW’s involvement focuses on strengthening relationships between higher education (HE) institutions and the public and private sectors, and between HE institutions and their local communities.
Our aim is that Welsh higher education:- compares well with other areas of the UK in terms of economic, social and cultural activity
- works actively and fully with communities, businesses and the public sector towards the Welsh and Westminster Governments' economic and social goals
- supports the Welsh Government’s aims, in respect of education for sustainable development and global citizenship and Wales's standing internationally
We have established a Research, Innovation and Engagement Committee with key public sector partners and businesses to guide strategy and policy in this area.
- We operate an Innovation and Engagement Fund to support HE institutions’ third mission strategies.
- In March 2009 we launched an Economic Support Initiative to support HE institutions in helping to counter the impact of the current economic downturn on individuals and employers.
- HEFCW, alongside the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the other UK HE funding bodies, is also supporting a three year research venture, exploring the Impact of HE institutions on Regional Economies.
We also manage the GO Wales graduate employability programme.
