Our responsibilities

As well as funding and regulating higher education, we develop policies in a range of areas, and encourage institutions to meet the Welsh Government's priorities in these areas.

The funding we give to universities is made available to us from the Welsh Government. As Welsh Government priorities develop, so do the range of policy areas, and specific activities within them.

Research, innovation and engagement

We aim to promote a dynamic and sustainable research base within higher education institutions. Our research base will support innovation that boosts productivity in Welsh businesses, delivering economic prosperity and social well-being for the people of Wales.

Degree apprenticeships

Degree apprenticeships are a new type of apprenticeship, which combine the workplace learning of a traditional apprenticeship with a higher education qualification. They can also include professional qualifications relevant to industry.

HEFCW students

Student experience and partnership

We aim to help universities and colleges to deliver the best possible experience for higher education students in Wales.

Widening Access and Inclusion

Widening access and inclusion

Widening access, inclusion, progression and success in higher education is a key part of our strategy for higher education.
