Business and communities survey (HEBCIS)

Universities contribute more than £1 billion a year in gross expenditure to the Welsh economy. On top of their traditional education role they have an important economic and social function.

Communities benefit from university amenities like arts and sports centres, museums and botanical gardens. Businesses can tap into the technology and expertise of their local university and employers have a source of skilled workers. Many universities help to promote Welsh language and culture, and contribute to cultural and racial diversity.

In order to support businesses, all universities in Wales have a nominated industrial liaison officer to act as a dedicated point of contact for businesses:

Annual Survey

The annual Higher Education – Business and Community Interaction Survey examines the exchange of knowledge between universities and the wider world, and informs the direction of Innovation and Engagement activity that funding bodies and universities in Wales undertake.

The surveys collect financial and output data every academic year. Results provide information on a range of activities, from the commercialisation of new knowledge, through the delivery of professional training, consultancy and services, to activities intended to have direct social benefits.
