The University of Wales, Newport can trace its roots to the Newport Mechanics Institute, which was founded in 1841. The University was established as Gwent College of Higher Education in September 1975 as a result of a merger of the Caerleon College of Education, the Newport College of Art and the Gwent College of Technology. On 1 April 1992, the College became a Higher Education Corporation, and was an Associated Institution of the University of Wales. The College formally became a University College of the University of Wales in April 1996, changing its title to University of Wales College Newport. In 2004 it became the University of Wales, Newport.
The University is located on two campuses in and around Newport, South Wales. The Caerleon Campus is the University's administrative centre and current home to the Newport School of Art, Media and Design, the School of Education and part of the School of Health and Social Sciences. The University's Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning is also located at Caerleon, with a community base in Tredegar. The Allt-yr-yn Campus, houses the Newport Business School and part of the School of Health and Social Sciences as well as, the Dyscovery Centre, which offers assessment and assistance to children and adults with dyslexia, dyspraxia and other learning difficulties. The new City Campus replaces the Allt-yr-yn Campus when it opens in 2010/11 and will become the focus of business, creative and entrepreneurship activity, becoming the new home of the Newport Business School and the design, film and media elements of the Art School.
The mission of the University of Wales, Newport is to: Inspire and enable individuals, organisations and communities to succeed through innovation in high quality learning, research and enterprise.
