The University of Wales, Lampeter is the oldest University institution in Wales. It was formally opened in 1827 as St David's College. It received Royal Charters permitting it to award its own degrees in 1852 and 1865. In 1971, it became a part of the University of Wales, originally holding its degree awarding powers in abeyance. The University’s degree awarding powers were revived in 2007 as part of the change of the University of Wales from a federal to a confederal structure, although Lampeter has elected to continue awarding degrees of the University of Wales. In 2009, the University resolved to work with Trinity University College to create a new University in Wales, Trinity Saint David.
The University is sited on a compact campus on its original site in the centre of Lampeter.
Strong academic traditions; an enterprising and dynamic spirit. An ethos in which engagement with leading edge research informs and supports teaching; an education for life; a supportive and caring community. The University seeks to offer programmes through a variety of modes including full-time and part-time study on campus, and a range of opportunities for study off-campus through supported distance learning (including electronic delivery) and arrangements with partner institutions. The University promotes research and scholarship and is committed to contributing to the social, cultural and economic development of its region.
