Swansea University was established by Royal Charter as a constituent institution of the University of Wales in 1920. In 2007, Her Majesty The Queen approved the grant of a new Supplemental Charter, which established Swansea as university in its own right. The formal change in status came into effect on 1 September 2007. After 5 years working in partnership with Cardiff University, the new Swansea University School of Medicine admitted its first full cohort of students in September 2009.
The main campus lies in Singleton Park overlooking Swansea Bay two miles west of Swansea City Centre. New developments such as the Institute of Life Science and Digital Technium sit alongside more historic buildings, such as the 19th Century neo-gothic Singleton Abbey, now home to the University’s administration. There is a second campus at Hendrefoelan which comprises a student village, accommodating approximately 1,600 students. Plans for a science and innovation campus with industrial partners are well underway.
Swansea University will provide an environment of research excellence, with research being undertaken that is internationally recognised and that informs all other activities at the University. Swansea University will deliver an outstanding student experience, with teaching of the highest quality, that produces graduates equipped for distinguished personal and professional achievement. The University community will be a powerhouse for growth in the regional economy, and will greatly enrich the community and cultural life of Wales. It will contribute to the health, leisure and well-being of citizens in South West Wales and beyond.
