Other HEFCW funding streams

While the bulk of HEFCW funding to institutions is provided as a block grant, funding is increasingly provided to support strategic objectives.

  • We provide funding support for institutional strategies in the key areas of Widening Access; Learning and Teaching, Initial Teacher Training and Innovation and Engagement.
  • We provide funding for bodies which support higher education activity, such as the Higher Education Academy, the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education and the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol. We also fund project work with the National Union of Students in Wales.
  • We reimburse institutions for their costs in relation to fees for students on ERASMUS placements.
  • We support part-time study through providing additional funding to institutions.
  • Our funding enables us to extend the GO Wales initiative, which is funded primarily with European funding in the Convergence area, to the non-Convergence areas of Wales.
  • In the area of medical provision, we supported the North Wales Clinical School for a period up to summer 2010.
  • We have operated a number of initiatives to support research development.
  • Our strategic funding includes support for projects funded under our Strategic Development Fund.
