Funding teaching
HEFCW’s main source of funding for learning and teaching in higher education institutions (HEIs) is the recurrent grant for teaching. It totals £260.2 million for the academic year 2011/12 and includes premium payments for widening access, disabled students and Welsh medium enrolments.
Higher education institutions receive their allocation as a block grant to use flexibly to support their own spending plans. Allocations are calculated in accordance with our Teaching Funding Method.

We also allocate capital funding to support the development of the learning, teaching and IT infrastructure in HEIs.
Initiative funds support a range of learning and teaching related activities, including HEIs’ learning and teaching strategies. We also fund work by partners such as the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and the Higher Education Academy.
